Earlier today, Downtown Cranford welcomed Palmas Café with an official ribbon cutting ceremony! Located at 32 North Avenue West (formerly Breadsmith), Palmas Café is owned by Taufik Palacios, an experienced restauranteur who has worked in the food business for decades. Taufik’s daughter Sabrina worked closely with him on the look and feel of the café, as well as the menu. In addition to standard coffee drinks, Palmas also serves matcha, cold brew, lemonade, frozen drinks, and a variety of lattes. Palmas Café is currently open 7 days a week from 6am-6pm.
Customers will find breakfast options and sandwiches on the menu, though people with a sweet tooth will most likely head straight for the pastries. Sabrina’s cousin, a trained pastry chef, makes macarons, croissants, cruffins, bomboloni, and more from scratch. Palmas Café also serves empanadas and pupusas, a traditional Salvadorian dish that resembles a tortilla stuffed with cheese and other toppings. “It was important to us to bring our heritage into the restaurant,” said Sabrina.

Palmas Café offers a relaxed and welcoming indoor space and customers can also enjoy their food and drinks on the back patio or tables out front. Though the line was out the door during the grand opening, employees were unflustered as they greeted customers with a smile as they whipped up a variety of drinks and filled boxes full of pastries. “I love to see people come in and try something new,” said Sabrina. “Everything at Palmas Cafe is done with intention and we hope that comes through to everyone who steps through our door.”

Township Commissioner Kathleen Miller Prunty, DMC Board members, friends and family were joined by Union County Commissioners Bette Jane Kowalski and Sergio Granados, who presented Taufik and his family with a resolution. The resolution from the Union County Board of County Commissioners congratulated Palmas Café on their grand opening and recognized that the space is a celebration of the family’s heritage and where they want everyone to feel welcome.
